A Geographic Information System (GIS) includes a series of computerised instruments for archiving, managing and processing data of various types and origins. A GIS is set up by over laying data sets to facilitate spatial analyses (topological overlays, buffering, network analyses, thematic maps, development plans, management systems) as well as being able to query the data bases.
The company has a highly qualified staff for the use of these systems, in addition to a considerable expertise in training and consulting among both public and private agencies.
Since when the company was founded, it has become known as a GIS laboratory providing support across the sectors. Through the formative and work experience of the partners and the operational staff, the company has become specialised in planning and building a wide variety of GIS:
- Road safety analyses (management of monitoring centres for provincial and urban road safety)
- Managing and monitoring airport safety
- Maintenance management of public enlightenment plants
- Risk analysis for civil defence (seismic, hydrogeological, volcanic, fires, industrial ones) and emergency management procedures
- Classifying and land registry
- Cultural assets management
- City planning (PRG, restrictions maps, cadastral maps).
Some of the main clients: Catania BBCCAA Superintendence, about 20 Sicilian Districts, several Departments of Catania University, GES.A.P. S.p.A. and SAC S.p.A. (Palermo and Catania Airports Authorities), Circumetnea Railway.
For years, GIS Design has been investing in research and developing prototypes, and then subsequently in business models for the sectors which manage network systems, data banks, safety analyses in road and air transport, and building and infrastructure heritage. The company has developed several GIS applications as extensions to ArcGIS® and ESRI® and other web applications which make use of territorial data from the Net with the aim of simplifying their use even for less qualified personnel.
In recent years, most investments have focused on converting web applications: with Google maps freely available and open source GIS software it has been possible to reduce the production cost and, consequently, the selling price, of the applications.
All partners and personnel of GIS Design are highly specialised in using GIS software (both ESRI® and the more common open source one) and together with university lecturers and researchers, the company organizes technical training courses for public and private employees.
Due to new regulations (D.D.G no. 1674, 03.10.2007, Regional Work Oversight), the company has been accredited with offering professional training courses of type B + FAD (D.A. no. 1037, 13.04.2006) on behalf of the Sicilian Region, and since 28.04.2011 it has been also accredited at ‘Fondoprofessioni’ as an authorised provider for continuous training in professional studies and associated companies.
